Xenia Community Library Announces August Programs

Exciting and fun programs for people of all ages are being planned at the Xenia Community Library, 76 East Market Street.

August Story Times

Baby Story Time for ages 0-24 mos. w/adult will be held at Xenia Community Library on Fri., Aug. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, from 10:30-11 a.m. Short stories, songs, rhymes, and lap bounces.

Preschool Story Time for ages 4-5 w/adult will be held at Xenia Community Library on Tue., Aug. 7, 14, 21, 28, from 10:30-11 a.m. Stories and fun.

Toddler Story Time for ages 2-3 w/adult will be held at Xenia Community Library on Tue., Aug. 7, 14, 21, 28, from 10:30-11 a.m. Stories, songs, fingerplays, rhymes, and fun.

Stories, Songs & Stretches for ages 3-6 will be held at Xenia Community Library on Thu., Aug. 23, 30, from 1-1:45 p.m. This story time for 3-6 year olds will incorporate yoga-inspired movement to help build early literacy and physical literacy skills. In addition to stories, there will be lots of moving, singing, dancing, and fun!

August  Children’s Programs

Back to School Maker Style for ages 8-21 will be held at Xenia Community Library’s Spark Place on Sat., Aug. 4, from 10 a.m.-noon. Create a custom covered composition book using the vinyl printer/cutter. Personalize a drawstring bag using our sublimation equipment. You will be using Adobe Illustrator to create your designs in this class. Registration required. Call 352-4000.

Puzzle-Palooza will be held at Xenia Community Library on Mon., Aug. 6, from 1-3 p.m. If you love jigsaw puzzles, drop in and join us. We’ll have several to test your skills.

Early Bookworms will be held at Xenia Community Library on Tue., Aug. 7, from 6-6:45 p.m. Read the book prior to the program and then attend the program for a rereading with fun learning activities. Check with Youth Services staff for this month's title.

Ready, Set, Draw! will be held at Xenia Community Library on Wed., Aug. 8, from 4-4:45 p.m. Join us for fun drawing activities!

Soldering 101 for ages 5+ will be held at Xenia Community Library’s Spark Place on Sat., Aug. 11, from 10 a.m.-noon. Soldering is fun! Learn the basics of electronic soldering. A kit will be provided to practice your newly acquired soldering skills. Registration required. Call 352-4000.

Back to School Crafts will be held at Xenia Community Library on Mon., Aug. 13, from 2-3 p.m. Decorate a pencil bag or notebook and make a button or two for your backpack to get ready for the new school year.

Unicorns and Mermaids! will be held at Xenia Community Library on Thu., Aug. 16, from 2-3 p.m. Make a unicorn tail and horn and mermaid hair and learn more about these mythical creatures.

Coding with Scratch for ages 8+ will be held at Xenia Community Library’s Spark Place on Sat., Aug. 18, from 10 a.m.-noon. Would you like to create your own games, stories, music, or animations? Learn how to use Scratch programming by completing basic coding activities. Create your own program while having fun with Scratch! Registration required. Call 352-4000.

Petite Picasso: Tape Resist Painting will be held at Xenia Community Library on Sat., Aug. 18, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Kids, preschoolers, and toddlers are invited to create a tape resist painting. Join us to tape washi tape to thick paper, then paint over the tape. When you are done, lift off the tape to see a cool design. We’ll meet in the Youth Services area.

Xenia Friends Movie Series will be held at Xenia Community Library on Sat., Aug. 18, from 2-4 p.m. Join us for a fun family movie and enjoy refreshments while you watch. For movie details, please call 352-4000.

Maker Friday will be held at Xenia Community Library on Fri., Aug. 24, from 3:30-5 p.m. Join us to explore different making techniques while we look at different technologies such as robots, LittleBits, SnapCircuits, and Squishy Circuits as well as non-tech making such as sewing, painting, or taping.

Xenia Community Library’s 40th Anniversary Celebration will be held at Xenia Community Library on Sat., Aug. 25, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. In August of 1978, a brand-new library building opened in Xenia. Join us to celebrate 40 years of the Xenia Community Library at its current location with special events, activities, and cake for everyone!

Wave Foundation Shark Cart will be held at Xenia Community Library on Sat., Aug. 25, from 1-2 p.m. Presented by the Wave Foundation: The Shark Cart was new in 2015 and brings live sharks to you! This program demystifies common misconceptions about sharks and gets you up-close and personal with these amazing creatures. In addition to the live sharks, several animal artifacts are used in this presentation like shark jaws, a can of shark fin soup, shark eggs, etc. By the end, you will discover how you can make a difference in shark conservation.

Crazy Chemistry for ages 6-10 will be held at Xenia Community Library on Wed., Aug. 29, from 4-5 p.m. Come try several hands-on science experiments!

Tiny Food Party for ages 10-18 will be held at Xenia Community Library on Fri., Aug. 31, from 3:30-5 p.m. Drop in to make and enjoy some tiny entrees and desserts. Registration required. Call 352-4000.

August Teen Programs

Sand Painting: Mandala Mania for ages 12-18 will be held at Xenia Community Library on Thu., Aug. 2, from 1-4 p.m. Use stencils to trace patterns and fill them in with sand. The end result will be a colorful mosaic! Presented by Debora Cook. Registration required. Call 352-4000.

Don’t Play Hopscotch: Formulating An Effective Research Plan for ages 18+ will be held at Xenia Community Library on Sat., Aug. 4, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. A research plan is more than a to-do list. It’s a way of approaching a genealogy problem and working out how to solve it. In the process, you’ll be less frustrated (because you won’t wonder what to do next) and more productive (because you won’t waste time spinning your wheels). Amy Johnson Crow will detail the steps involved in formulating an effective research plan that ensures your genealogical research is productive and fun! Amy is a Certified Genealogist with more than 20 years of experience, specializing in Ohio research, especially counties in the central and southeastern part of the state. She is a member of First Families of Ohio and a charter member of Society of Civil War Families of Ohio. She is an active blogger at her site www.amyjohnsoncrow.com. This program is co-sponsored by the Greene County Room—Local History & Genealogy and the Greene County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society.

Block of the Month for ages 18+ will be held at Xenia Community Library on Wed., Aug. 8, from 3-5:15 p.m. and 5:30-7:45 p.m. The pattern “No Measure Bargello” will be taught on the second Wednesday of each month. Because it is a continuing program, it is important that you attend all sessions. The pattern takes a very difficult quilt design and makes it easy. You will complete a quilt top, learn how to sandwich a quilt together, machine quilt and bind it. All material will be provided for a lap size quilt.
