Dr. Nikki Taylor on “Driven to Madness”
Author Talk and Express Yourself Saturday Arts Workshop

Visit the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center (NAAMCC) in Wilberforce on Saturday, April 8 at 11:00 a.m. to hear author and Howard University African American history professor Nikki M. Taylor discuss her new book Driven toward Madness: The Fugitive Slave Margaret Garner and Tragedy on the Ohio.
Dr. Taylor’s book recounts the story of Margaret Garner, a runaway slave who, when confronted with capture, slit the throat of her toddler daughter rather than have her face a life in slavery. Her story inspired Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved. Taylor is a professor of African American history at Howard University. Her other books include: Frontiers of Freedom: Cincinnati’s Black Community, 1802–1868 and America’s First Black Socialist: The Radical Life of Peter H. Clark.
You can also join us for our Express Yourself Saturday art class at 10:30 a.m. This is four-hour workshop will be presented by Columbus artist Pepper. Learn how to create prayer shawls that are worn by Ghanaian women to honor the memory of deceased relatives. You will create polymer beads for your Ghanaian prayer shawl using jewelry or other memorabilia from a family member or friend you want to honor. Please bring the jewelry or other pieces you want to use to the workshop
