City of Xenia’s Tree Committee accepting nominations for Heritage Tree Program

Xenia, Ohio (March 12, 2024) – The City of Xenia’s Tree Committee is now accepting nominations for its annual Heritage Tree Program. The Tree Committee is a sub-committee of the Xenia Recreation and Events Commission (XREC).

The program was launched in 2012 and its purpose is to identify Heritage Trees within the City and honor them for their unique history, shape, size, beauty, and specie. The program also identifies trees as a unique living resource of the community.

Xenia residents have the ability to submit nominations for their favorite trees by filling out a form located on the City of Xenia’s website and returning it to the City Administration Building (107 E. Main Street). The property owner of the land the tree sits on must consent to it being nominated to the program for it to be accepted by the Tree Committee. The tree must meet the following criteria in order to be nominated:

  • Specimen: A tree of exceptional size, form or rarity, or horticultural value
  • Historic: A tree of exceptional age, and/or associated with or contribution to an historic structure or district or with a noted person or historic event
  • Landmark: A tree that is a prominent identifying feature of a community
  • Collection: A group of trees in a notable grove, avenue or other planting
