CASH MOB 101

CASH MOB 101

Cash Mob - an organized "mob" that meets and spends money at a local, independent business at a specified time. Cash Mobs are the perfect way to shop local, have fun, and meet new people in our community.

We held our first Cash Mob at Gypsy Alley Boutique in October. It was delightful to see everyone show up to support our downtown businesses... and fun! November's featured business is Tiffany Jewelers.

Wednesday, 7 November
5-6 pm - Cash Mob @ Tiffany Jewelers - 179 W Main St
6-7 pm - After Mob @ Devil Wind Brewery - 130 S Detroit St

THE RULES: Commit to spending at least $10 at the featured mob business.

When you are done shopping, come to the after mob meet-up location.

Have a ridiculous amount of fun knowing you are single handedly supporting your local business community. Did you know that for every $100 spent at a local small business, $68 returns to the community?

Tiffany Jewelers,
A Xenia Gem From Generation to Generation
by Taylor Trenton, Single Source News

Tiffany Jewelers’ history sparkles like one of the fine gem stones in their beautiful display cases. Not only are they the oldest jeweler in Xenia, they are almost certainly the oldest operating retailer. Tiffany opened its doors for business back in the 1840’s when it was established as a Variety Store and Clock Shop.

In 1879, the store was expanded into a full-service jewelry store and was owned and operated by A.P. Tiffany and his father David Tiffany. Several years later, A.P.'s son George entered the business, and added the optometry side — he was also a watchmaker. George took over running the store in the 1930s when his father passed away.

Upon George’s passing in 1958, the business went to the Jenner family and to Robert Swigart. Robert became sole owner in the early 70's when the Jenners retired. Robert began his career at Tiffany’s in 1943, sweeping floors and delivering packages before and after school. He went on to become a watchmaker like George.

In 1980 Tiffany's suffered a devastating fire, but despite the setback, Robert bought land and rebuilt the business at its current location. Robert retired in 1993.

Tiffany Jewelers remained a family business, under the current owner, Tom Swigart. Tom was brought into the business in 1975 the same as his father, Robert, sweeping floors, wrapping gifts, and delivering packages. He was 14 years old at the time. Because of Tom’s drive and motivation, he quickly moved on to the sales floor and learned to do repairs. These days you’ll find Tom at the repair bench or in the office. He’s still is a regular on the sales floor if needed.

The other key members of the Tiffany Team are Dawn Rader and Jill Adkins. Dawn is the Gemologist and manager of the store, she has been part of the Tiffany family since 1992. Dawn was raised in the Xenia area, and along with her husband, have raised two children in Xenia township. Jill is a sales associate and has worked at Tiffany's since 2005. Jill is in charge of staging the beautiful displays and customer service. Jill was born and raised in the Xenia community and still resides there with her husband.

According to Dawn, one of the most rewarding parts of the business is helping a customer customize that special item for their life event. “The friendships we have made over the years have been great,” says Dawn. “Meeting young couples as they pick out wedding rings, and seeing their families grow and continue to patronize our store for celebratory gifts is so rewarding.” Dawn went on to say how proud they are to offer products by several local artists, and how much of the store’s inventory is made up of products made right here in the USA.

Over the past 3 years, Tiffany’s has expanded to offer a variety of products for the ladies. “We have a wonderful boutique department of lady’s tops, dresses, purses, and scarves,” stated Jill. “We would like to expand into men's clothing area as well. We are constantly looking for a new jewelry line, or clothing line, that will enhance the store.”

When we asked Tom about the secret to the length of success Tiffany’s has enjoyed in the Xenia community for over a century-and-a-half, he smiles and attributes it to two words — customer satisfaction. “Tiffany’s is a great place to shop, and a great place to work. The longevity of our employees, the customers who faithfully shop here generation-to-generation, and the quality of our products and service, all this keeps us moving forward. Family values have always dictated what we do. We are family and our customers are treated like a part of our family,” says Tom.

One of the things that really stands out to this writer, is the wonderful collection of unique items not found in larger cookie-cutter stores. As a full-service jewelry store, they offer gorgeous pieces from fashionwear to 14kt. They have a large selection of sterling silver jewelry [my personal favorite], as well as giftware. I particularly loved browsing through the watches and can’t wait to bring my girl back to check out the boutique apparel. There’s a warmth and small-town charm to Tiffany Jewelers. Couple that with the friendly staff, and the integrity and honesty that it takes to keep a business alive for 178 years, and you have all the reasons you need to visit Tiffany Jewelers in Xenia.

The store is open Monday through Friday 9:00am to 5:30pm; Saturday 9:00am to noon; and closed Sunday. Special hours are added during December for holiday-shoppers. They also offer jewelry and watch repair, engraving, and appraisals by appointment. The store is conveniently located at 179 W. Main Street in Xenia, just minutes from Dayton on Rt. 35 East. For more information call them at (937) 372-3161 or visit online at tiffanysonline.com and on Facebook.
