PIE Donation/Sponsorship Form |
A group of Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce members is ramping up efforts to help Xenia Community Schools meet some budget shortfalls. The long-running Partners in Education Committee is establishing a page on the Chamber's web site that lets the public know how to make donations to the district. Items being requested include smaller items like pencils and magic markers to big-ticket items like tape players and televisions.
Committee member Stephanie Johnston is serving as the liaison between the committee and the schools. She has been active with the McKinley PTO and believes there are individuals and businesses in the community who would be willing to help out of they just knew how to help.
"We're emphasizing to the community that there are a number of ways to help," said Johnston. "Someone may have a ream or box of paper laying around and want to put it to good use. They may have an old cd player and headphones that students can use to listen to language lessons. Some of these items we take for granted. Every school building in the district has needs and we want to help out."
Xenia Superintendent Deborah Piotrowski is glad the Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce has such an interest in helping the schools be successful.
"The cost of supplies continues to rise," said Piotrowski. "We want our teachers to have everything they need to help our students succeed. The fact that a group from the chamber is stepping up speaks volumes about character of this community."
The Partners in Education Committee goes back two decades and has consistently been at the forefront of forming links between the community and the schools. Founded by Brian Liming and bolstered by chairmen Rick Kolmin and Dr. Jim Smith, the committee sponsors awards programs and scholarships for Xenia High School seniors.
"The committee members want to go back to what the original members built," added Johnston. "We want to partner interested Xenia residents with the schools."
Johnston and committee chairman Ron Bolender can be reached via email at partners@xacc.com. |
