FFA Chapters Host Annual Blue and Gold Day:

The Greene County FFA Chapters hosted their annual Blue and Gold Ag Day to promote agriculture careers to Xenia fifth graders. Organized and facilitated by FFA members, the event featured a series of presentations regarding subjects like soil conservation, farm machinery, animal care and more. This year the program was held at our Agricultural Research Center on Brush Row Road.
Congressman Mike Turner Visits Career Center Labs:
Congressman Mike Turner of Ohio's 3rd Congressional District visited Greene County Career Center on Sept. 26 to learn more about high school and adult workforce education. The tour included stops in our high school Cosmetology, Information Technology and Welding programs where Rep. Turner interacted with students and teaching staff. Rep. Turner also visited the adult Criminal Justice Training Academy's Basic Peace Officer class. Pictured above Information Technology junior Justin Murrell explains his latest project to Rep. Mike Turner.
Veterinary Science In Spotlight For Fairborn Rotary:

We recently hosted the Fairborn Rotary Club for one of their weekly meetings. As in previous Rotary meetings held in the Greene Room, a career-technical program is allowed 20 minutes during the program for students to demonstrate their skills. The Veterinary Science program was invited and students demonstrated a variety of diagnostic techniques on a series of animals. Pictured above are Noelle Taylor of Fairborn, Austin Deless of Bellbrook and Jessica Thompson of Greeneview.
Adult Basic Peace Officer Academy Grad Hired in Riverside:
Jessica Skinner, a graduate of our adult Criminal Justice Academy Basic Peace Officer class, was recently sworn in as a full time officer by Riverside Mayor Bill Flaute. Basic Peace Officer graduates are being hired by a number of local police departments, sheriff’s offices and other agencies. Currently the program is at full capacity.
“The Outsiders” Settle Differences in GCCC English Class:

Toni Dean’s English class came up with a unique way to study the novel “The Outsiders.” After reading the book, researching the 1960’s, completing a detailed character analysis, studying vocabulary from the book and making a Facebook page for our favorite character the class had a party to “Bring the Book Alive!”
At the party, the Greasers met the Soc’s and decided to party instead of rumble. Students came in costume, ate the foods the characters ate in the story and explained who their favorite character was and why. They listened to the greatest hits of the 1960’s, talked about the economy, jobs, gas prices (68 cents per gallon) and world news including the Vietnam War. We looked at what life was like for teenagers in the 60’s and examined how alike and different they are today in comparison to their 1960 counterparts. All in all it was a memorable day. Their next book is ”Frankenstein.” Bringing that novel alive (and Frankie) should be interesting.
GED Test To Be Offered On-Line Via GCCC AWE:
The Greene County Career Center is partnering with GED Testing Service to offer the GED test on computer in a commitment to provide more adult learners throughout the state with a high school credential. Registration and scheduling will be available for this simple process will begin September 24, 2012 and testing will begin on October 2, 2012.
Registering, scheduling and testing on computer will provide a new experience for GED test-takers and continue to improve the GED testing system, which is a gateway for adults to find jobs or better paying jobs, enter workforce or college training programs, and better support themselves and their families.
The GED test on computer is the same test content currently offered on paper. Its accompanying systems will provide an array of new benefits for both Greene County Career Center and GED test-takers. Some of the initial benefits include:
- One-stop online registration and scheduling available 24/7
- Flexible testing appointments for test-takers
- Instant test scores on 4 of 5 content areas
- An introduction of basic keyboarding and computer skills
- Enhanced test security
“Greene County Career Center is proud to lead the way with GED testing on computer in Southwestern Ohio. Adding this new option for adult learners will provide immediate and long-term benefits,” says Dr. Barbara Wagner, Adult Workforce Education Director. “From hospitals to construction sites, basic technology, including computer use and keyboarding skills, are common in the workplace today. Test-takers can now demonstrate mastery of these basic technology skills through the GED test on computer, learn immediately of their results, and be better prepared to enter the workplace
Offering GED testing on computer also has an important role in increasing accessibility and flexibility for test-takers, since a double-digit increase in the number of GED test-takers is expected by 2013. A new GED assessment is scheduled to be released in Jan. 2014, and a significant number of adults who haven’t taken or passed all five content areas will want to test before their scores expire at the end of 2013.
While testing and scheduling on computer is a significant new benefit for test-takers, GED Testing Service warns consumers there are those who will attempt to bilk unsuspecting adults out of precious dollars by creating confusion online. “The GED test – whether on paper or computer – must be taken in-person at an official GED testing center,” said Trask. “Potential test-takers should not respond to individuals or so-called “institutions” offering an online GED test.”
