McKinley: Student Response Systems for Success

"Clickers," or student response systems, give students and teachers instant feedback about their answers. Students type in their answer into a remote device which transmits the answer to a computer. All of the students' answers are tracked and compiled so that students and teachers are able to tell which questions/skills students know well, and on which ones they need more practice. Teachers can bring up a graph to show students how the class as a whole performed on a given question.

Interactive whiteboards allow teachers to project pictures, information, notes, questions/problems, etc. for lesson presentations. Pictured is Mrs. Palmer projecting a page out of a textbook. She is able to highlight, underline, circle, and write notes about the content in the page margins. All of these are strategies teachers use to model reading skills to students.

Fire Captain Joel Busch, husband of teacher, Mrs. Tammy Busch, and Firefighter Dave Parker of Kettering Fire Department visited the First Grade classes at Tecumseh Elementary School in celebration of Fire Safety Month.

The message delivered focused on Fire Safety. Students actively participated in the presentation and learned knowledge like using the 911 phone number, how to safely get out of their house, and how to suppress fire on their clothing. Firefighter Parker showed students what firefighters look like and sound like in action so students would learn not to hide from firefighters searching for them. Finally, students were given information about having working smoke detectors in their homes. The children really enjoyed the Fire Safety presentation.

XHS Junior Jeremy Brown has Great Season and is Athlete of the Week

Xenia High School Junior Jeremy Brown has led the Xenia Bucs Men's Soccer team to the GWOC South Title this season and a number 4 ranking locally. His 15 goals and six assists have elevated him statistically to the number two spot in the conference. Brown's ability to make clutch plays has drawn praise from opposing coaches. His leadership is respected on and off the field.

WMS: Studying the Solar System

While studying all parts of our Solar System in eighth grade science, Mrs. Kloos' classes spent two days on stations that helped students understand how the solar system worked. There were 10 stations the students rotated through that highlighted the different parts. The stations included making an accurate model of the planets, measuring the amount of radiation in space, problem solving as an astronaut, meteorites, and comets just to name a few.

The students worked in groups of two or three as they answered questions, analyzed data, and hypothesized about each station. The students experienced hand-on learning in a way that helped them put together information on how the solar system is organized.

The students pictured are Ian Jones and Kyle Hollen.

Service Project at Simon Kenton

Simon Kenton 4th graders completed a service learning project where they created fall decorations for the residents doors at The Greenwood Manor Nursing Home in Xenia. Thanks to teacher, Becky Sexten, for having her students participate in this project.

Daniel Michalski: GWOC South Athlete of the Year

Xenia's Daniel Michalski won the GWOC South Division cross country title and was named the GWOC South Athlete of the Year. He also broke the school record.

"Daniel is an outstanding student and leader. Daniel has been our number one runner all year. He won the Buck Creek Invitational and the Xenia Christian Ambassador meet," Xenia head coach David Oldiges said. "This has been one of the better teams we have had here in Xenia. We won the Xenia Christian meet and placed second at the Bellbrook Invitational."

Oldiges said that the team fielded 29 athletes both male and female this season. The program has been buoyed by the successful junior high school team which is in its third year. But the varsity has been improving tremendously.

AG Day Hosted by Greene County FFA

What is Ohio's largest industry?  Cox and Tecumseh Fifth Graders will tell you it is agriculture.

Fifth grade classes attended the sixth annual Blue and Gold Agriculture Day at the Greene County Career center on October 11.  Students rotated through six interactive, educational stations focusing on science and agriculture.  They learned about Bio-products, corn, animals and fish, farm equipment, and veterinary science.

Students learned about every aspect of farming from crops, to equipment, animals, to germs. Students created food treats made from dairy and corn products. They even learned about Veterinarian Sciences. It was great way for students to interact with the high school students and a wonderful way for the high school students to share their love and knowledge of agriculture.

According to fifth grade student, Garrett Karolyi, "It was pretty sweet. The group leaders taught us all sorts of interesting things, like how many products come from soy beans, corn, and cotton."

A Message from Superintendent Dr. Deb Piotrowski

Dear Parents of Students in the Xenia Schools and All Residents of the School District:

I would like to take this opportunity to share some positive information with you about our Xenia Schools. Recently, we have shared the story across the community at our public information nights and in staff meetings at each of our buildings.

We have great schools; great students, great teachers and great staff.

There are exciting new reading and math programs that will prepare our kids for the 21st century and our progress is showing.

Four out of five elementary schools are rated as excellent by the State of Ohio.

As a district, we met the indicator for value-added which means we are meeting and exceeding our goal to give the students a year's growth in the time span of the school year. Xenia High School met 10 out of 12 indicators, and we are seeing achievement growth across all grade levels.

All of that success is based upon the past.  Now, it's time to look ahead.

November 6 is a critical election day for our Xenia schools.  In this election, we have a levy on the ballot that will sustain our district's day-to-day operations.  It's about keeping teachers in the classroom and programs for students.
