Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit
The application period for Round 8 of the Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit program is now open. The Application form and Self-Scoring Sheet can be downloaded under 'General Program Forms' on the program website: http://development.ohio.gov/Urban/OHPTC/. A total of $29.6 million in tax credit allocation is currently available for Round 8 applicants.
Applicants are required to notify both the Office of Redevelopment and Ohio Historic Preservation Office prior to submitting an application and are strongly encouraged to schedule a pre-application meeting with both offices. Please note that applications must be submitted (not postmarked) to the Office of Redevelopment by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2012 (as March 31 falls on a Saturday).
Round 8 will be administered on the following schedule:
- Application Submission Deadline: March 30
- Application Review Period: April 3 – June 15
- Approved Applications Announced: on or before June 30

Program Summary
The Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit Program is administered by the Ohio Department of Development’s Urban Development Division, with assistance provided by the Ohio Historic Preservation Office of the Ohio Historical Society and the Ohio Department of Taxation. The Program provides a tax credit for the rehabilitation expenses to owners of historically significant buildings.
The tax credit provides 25 percent of qualified rehabilitation expenditures for historic rehabilitation projects. The expenditures represent hard construction costs generally consisting of improvements made to the building structure and interior. The work must meet the U.S. Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation of Historic Properties.
A building is eligible if it is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located in a registered historic district, is certified by Ohio's Preservation Officer as being of historic significance to the district, or is listed as a historic landmark by a certified local government.
Over the seven funding rounds, $279.3 million in tax credits have been approved for 126 applicants to rehabilitate 158 historic buildings in 30 different communities. The program is projected to leverage $1.64 billion in private redevelopment funding and federal tax credits directly through the rehabilitation projects.
