What is the Greene County College Success Partnership (GCCSP)?

• A component part of the Greene County Community Foundation (GCCF).
• Organized in 2004 by Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce Partners in Education Committee (XACC PIEC).
• Mission: Increase the number of Greene County residents that attend and complete college or post secondary schools. Vision: GCCSP has a vision to affect public initiatives, to promote administration of student aid programs, and to encourage an environment of cooperation between individuals, agencies, organizations and educational institutions to better serve all students.
• GCCSP administers “Last Dollar Scholarships”. We have raised over $494,000 for scholarships.
• Operational funding grants have totaled over $392,000 from Great Lakes, OCAN and others.
• Advisors provide the traditional college access program activities including
• Career advising, college entrance testing advising
• Financial aid advising, scholarship search support
• College application support
• We are currently active in Bellbrook, Fairborn, Xenia High Schools and the GC Career Center and have held 672 individual sessions with students last year and met with over 230 parents. There are 30% more Green County students in the other schools that we are not providing service.
• Our services are primarily for low income and minority students and their parents. Greene County has about 32% first generation students and 11% minority students and 47% of our 1500 seniors start college.
• We have received a $20,000 grant to expand our network and are seeking an AmeriCorps Member.
Partners include: Clark State Community College, Central State University, Wright State University, GC Businesses, GC Education Service Center, XACC PIEC, GCCF, Greene Memorial Hospital and have used a $50,000 grant to raise over $500,000 for internships and scholarships.

What is the Ohio College Access Network (OCAN)?

Created in 1999, the Ohio College Access Network is the first and leading statewide coordinating body for college access programs in the nation. OCAN links 36 community-based, locally-run college access programs that serve nearly 200 of Ohio’s school districts schools in 46 counties touching 175,000 students annually. OCAN traditional member programs across Ohio help students, particularly low-income or those who are first in their families pursue and complete education beyond high school. By educating Ohioans, OCAN helps strengthen Ohio’s workforce which positively impacts the state’s economic stability.

Since 2002, OCAN has received a state appropriation known as the College Access Initiative to strengthen these organizations by providing program development, sustainability and advocacy services. In 2008, OCAN will use the additional $8.5 million appropriation to spearhead the OhioCan! Go to College fundraising campaign for need-based “last dollar” scholarships and internships with a $100 million goal.

After implementing OCAN college access services, high schools with an OCAN member program have an average 3.8% increase in college going rates among their graduates. High schools with OCAN member programs also obtained an average 4.5% higher graduation rate after implementing OCAN college access services.  For more information contact OCAN at 614.947.3500 or visit OCAN online at www.ohiocan.org.
