There will be warm drinks and freshly baked sweets for all, and every child will receive a free gift to celebrate the joy of reading. Enter a free drawing to win a beautiful leather-bound literary classic.
Xenia’s only general-interest book store is located at 60 South Detroit Street in a Civil War-era building with an original tin ceiling and a resident book store cat. "Most of our inventory is used" explains owner Elizabeth Svendsen, "but we do have some new books—mainly titles of local interest, a line of inexpensive classics, and activity books and coloring books for kids." Whether new or used, all of the books are carefully chosen and in very good condition.
"We have more than 20,000 books on the store shelves, and new arrivals come in every day," says Svendsen. "People sell us estates and collections, or just bring in books they’ve read to trade for store credit. A few weeks ago, we bought about 2000 military history books. We’re still working on getting them all sorted and shelved."
Other strengths of the store include literature, mysteries, and science fiction, poetry, religion, American history, and metaphysical books. "I think there’s something here for almost every kind of reader" says long-time employee Rosi Mackey. "We’ve got gardening and crafts, woodworking, books on planes, trains, and automobiles, westerns…you name it. I personally read a lot of mysteries and I love making recommendations for our customers. I also have to look at all the cookbooks that come through here."
Blue Jacket Books is open Tuesday - Thursday from 10-6, Friday from 10-7 and Saturday from 10-5. They are normally closed Sunday and Monday but will open by appointment on those days. To contact Blue Jacket Books, call 937-376-3522 or visit their website at www.bluejacketbooks.com.
