Xenia Community Schools achieve second year as District of Excellence from State of Ohio

Warner Middle School students receive new flag from American Legion Post 95

Students in the multi-disabilities class of Cynthia Harris at Warner Middle School have taken on the challenge of raising and lowering the schools flag each day.  And now, they have a new flag presented to them by members of the American Legion Post #95.
Students were shown how to correctly fold a flag and learned the correct way to retire a flag.  Following the in-class discussion, the students and veterans raised the new flag to half mast in memory of Sen. Edward Kennedy.

Students learned the meaning of each fold in the flag as they learned the proper way to fold the flag from members of the American Legion Post #95.

Xenia Community Schools achieve second year as District of Excellence from State of Ohio

Capping twelve straight years of continuous improvement in the classroom, Xenia Community Schools (XCS) has been rated Excellent by the Ohio Department of Education for the second year in a row with the highest passing rate for Xenia students since the State of Ohio started keeping a record in 1997.
We are extremely pleased with the academic progress students achieved last year, says XCS Assistant Superintendent O. Randolph
Overbeck, Ph.D.   This growth in the classroom proves that hard work
by teachers, students and parents are paying off with improved test results.  Twelve straight years of continuous improvement is a record few districts in all of Ohio can match.
The district report card for 2008-2009 revealed Xenias highest Performance Index (PI) of 91.2 since the system began.  PI is the system used by the State to count and weigh the performance of all students on every test.  Xenia schools also improved its standards on the No Child Left Behind measure of Adequate Yearly Progress or AYP.
Dr. Overbeck adds Xenia schools met five more State Indicators than last year for a total of 16.
Xenia also earned positive ratings from the State in the growth category or Value Added.  This rating measures how much students grow or progress academically.  Xenia students, Dr. Overbeck says, showed more than one years growth overall during the school year.
Within the district, both Central Middle School and Tecumseh Elementary School were designated as Excellent.  Arrowood Elementary School, McKinley Elementary School and Spring Hill Elementary School were rated as Effective.
We couldnt achieve this progress without the combined efforts of teachers, students and parents, Dr. Overbeck says.  All of us must work together to provide the best education our children must have to succeed professionally and personally as adults.
