Homeless students benefit Xenia Community Schools’ outreach program

Reaching out to families in transition, Xenia Community Schools (XCS) support students who may be dealing with homelessness by offering assistance with enrollment, transportation and providing basic supplies.  Funded through the McKinney-Vento grant, the program is spearheaded by XCS Homeless Liaison Sandy Pramer with the additional financial support of community individuals, businesses and organizations. An increasing number of local children are served by the schools’ homeless program. Recently, an anonymous donor gave Pramer $200 that was used to purchase shoes---items not covered by the educational grant---for a local family. Shown is Pramer as she prepares to deliver backpacks filled with school supplies, shoes, bedding and basic hygiene items to the Red Cross Emergency Housing Shelter.  For more information on the program or how to support its efforts, contact Pramer at 562-9017.

LOCAL FFA CHAPTER EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION

The National FFA Organization recently selected from a pool of more than 600 candidates nationwide the Xenia High School/ Greene County FFA Chapter as a three-star winner in the National FFA Chapter Award program.  The chapter members have been invited to attend the 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis this October to be recognized for this honor.

The award program is a special project of the National FFA Foundation. The National FFA Chapter Award program recognizes FFA chapters for developing and conducting a detailed Program of Activities (POA). Each activity provides opportunities for members to excel in one of three areas: student, chapter, or community development. Every year, chapters are recognized as having earned a one-, two- or three-star rating on their application. The three-star rating is the highest level of accomplishment a chapter may achieve.

The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 507,763 student members – all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture – as part of 7,439 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

The National FFA Organization changed to its present name in 1988, in recognition of the growth and diversity of agriculture and agricultural education. The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

Books are a big attraction at Simon Kenton Elementary School fundraiser

Books were the exciting main attraction at the recent Book Sale sponsored by the Simon Kenton Elementary School PTA.  The school fundraiser allowed students to look through the large selection of books, complete their wish list and take it home to their parents.  Students could then bring their money in and receive their prized books. Books sold were specifically designed for students in certain ages.
