Greene County Combined Health District Awarded Obesity Prevention Grant Extension

The Greene County Combined Health District (GCCHD) has been awarded an extension on their obesity prevention grant from the Ohio Department of Health.

The District received $37,500.00 to work on preventing youth obesity, including the Greene County Healthy Lifestyles Coalition (formerly the Fitness Task Force), the Healthier Me program and a new program called an Ounce of Prevention. The extension will allow GCCHD to continue the program until September 30, 2009.

A Healthier Me is a program that worked with elementary school students on the importance of healthy nutrition and regular physical activity.  Students were pre and post tested before and after an intervention.  An Ounce of Prevention is an ODH program that trains physicians and other health care professionals to incorporate healthy nutrition and physical activity messages into regular doctor visits for parents of children ages birth to 3 years. During the extension, this program will be presented to Head Starts and daycares in Greene County.

The grant is also targeting Greene County business’s to provide education on obesity and encourage their participation in the Greene County Healthy Lifestyles Coalition

The next meeting of the Greene County Healthy Lifestyles Coalition will be Monday, September 14, 2009 from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the GCCHD offices.  The meeting is open to anyone interested in improving the health and well-being of Greene County residents.
